How TV 2 Regionerne manages livestreaming across 8 broadcasters on one platform
From always-on wildlife cameras to regional events and special broadcasts, TV 2 Regionerne uses Castr to support different streaming requirements across its eight stations.
Denmark’s regional public-service broadcasting network
TV 2 Regionerne brings together eight regional broadcasters across Denmark. Each station covers local news, public affairs, and events that matter to people in its region.
The broadcasters operate independently, with their own editorial teams, programming schedules, and audiences. While each station focuses on its own region, they share the same goal of keeping local communities informed and connected.
Livestreaming is one of the ways these broadcasters keep their communities connected to local events. From breaking news and public ceremonies to wildlife cameras running 24/7, viewers can follow what’s happening in their region directly on the broadcaster’s website.
Managing different streaming setups across 8 broadcasters
With eight regional broadcasters covering different events and stories, TV 2 Regionerne needs to manage a wide range of livestreams, each with its own requirements.
Some streams are set up for a specific event and only run for a few hours. Others, like wildlife cameras, stay live around the clock for months or even years.
These different types of broadcasts require different approaches. Event streams need to be set up quickly and monitored throughout the broadcast, while always-on cameras need to run reliably with minimal intervention.
Managing all of this across 8 stations can become complicated, especially when multiple broadcasts are running at the same time. The challenge was to find a consistent way to manage both temporary events and continuous livestreams without adding unnecessary work for the technical teams.
The priorities:
- Manage livestreams across multiple regional broadcasters
- Support always-on cameras that run continuously
- Set up temporary streams for regional events
- Deliver HLS video with adaptive bitrate playback across devices
- Simulcast coverage to external platforms when needed
- Give technical teams shared access to manage streams
One streaming platform for different broadcasting needs
TV 2 Regionerne needed more than a platform for occasional live events. Its streaming setup had to support everything from short, one-off broadcasts to camera feeds that run continuously, sometimes for months or years.
Castr offered the flexibility to support these different requirements within one platform. Each broadcast could have its own configuration, while the technical teams had access to the same tools for managing streams across the network.
Castr also provided the video delivery capabilities the broadcasters needed, including HLS playback, adaptive bitrate streaming, and simulcasting to external destinations.
One central platform for every region, station, and event
TV 2 Regionerne started using Castr in 2024 to manage livestreaming across its eight regional broadcasters.
Each station sets up and manages its own broadcasts through Castr, with dedicated streams for individual events and long-running camera feeds. The technical teams use Castr’s Teams feature to access a shared account, where they can prepare upcoming events, monitor ongoing broadcasts, and manage streams across the network.
Once a stream is live, Castr handles video delivery through HLS with adaptive bitrate streaming, so playback quality can adjust to different devices and internet connections. For events that need wider distribution, the stations can also simulcast their broadcasts to other platforms.
The streaming setup includes:
HLS delivery for websites and apps
Adaptive bitrate streaming
Regional ingest options
Simulcasting to external destinations
Dedicated streams for regional events
Support for always-on live cameras
Centralized stream management
Shared access through Castr Teams
Running always-on public-interest streams
One of TV 2 Regionerne’s long-running livestreams is TV SYD’s Storkecam, which lets viewers follow a family of storks nesting in Smedager, Southern Jutland.
Launched in 2014 in collaboration with Storkene.dk, the project has attracted a loyal audience, particularly among schools, kindergartens, and care homes. By 2021, Storkecam had recorded more than 37 million live viewing minutes.
Unlike a typical event livestream, Storkecam doesn’t follow a fixed broadcast schedule. The camera needs to stay live for extended periods without constant attention from the technical team.
Castr provides the streaming infrastructure needed to support these continuous broadcasts and keep them available to viewers 24/7.
Managing regional events with different streaming requirements
Beyond always-on streams, TV 2 Regionerne’s broadcasters regularly cover public events, local ceremonies, and one-time productions. Unlike continuous camera feeds, these broadcasts have their own schedules and streaming requirements.
Some events need dedicated streaming channels, while others require different stream configurations or simulcasting to multiple platforms.
Castr provides the flexibility to support these different requirements, so broadcasters can set up each event according to its needs without having to manage separate streaming systems.
Giving broadcast teams shared access
With eight regional broadcasters, TV 2 Regionerne has technical teams working across different stations and locations. They need access to the same streaming account to prepare broadcasts, monitor live streams, and manage day-to-day operations.
TV 2 Regionerne uses Castr Teams to give multiple technical users access to a shared account. Each team member has their own login and can access the streams they need to work on.
A shared streaming setup across eight regional broadcasters
Since moving to Castr, TV 2 Regionerne has brought its different livestreaming workflows into one platform.
The technical teams can manage everything from permanent wildlife cameras to temporary event broadcasts without maintaining a separate streaming setup for every station or use case.
With Castr, TV 2 Regionerne can:
Manage livestreams across multiple regional broadcasters from one platform
Keep always-on public-interest cameras running continuously
Create dedicated streams for local events and special broadcasts
Deliver HLS video with adaptive bitrate playback across devices
Simulcast broadcasts to external platforms when needed
Give technical teams shared access to manage streaming operations
Castr is now part of TV 2 Regionerne’s regional streaming workflow. The broadcasters have a consistent way to manage their live coverage, while each station retains the flexibility to stream the stories and events that matter to its audience.
